Madrid is one of the essential capitals of any trip through southern Europe, and within the city there is a corner that sums up why it is worth it. The Barrio de las Letras was home to the writers who founded literature in Spanish: Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Góngora all lived here, and this is where the comedies of the Golden Age premiered. At Trip Tours EU we have added it to our network of free tours across Europe because it fits beautifully on your second or third day in Madrid, once you have seen the grand sights and want to get into the detail.
In 2 hours and 15 minutes you walk through four centuries, from Puerta del Sol to the narrow streets where golden verses set into the ground can still be read. It is a plan made for curious travellers: book lovers, literature students, families looking for more than photos and European travellers linking cities who want to understand the culture, not just glance at it in passing.
What sets us apart from most walks in the area is that we go inside the Lope de Vega House Museum, the home where the man known as the "Phoenix of Wits" wrote much of his work. Many free tours stop at the door; we cross it, always subject to the museum's opening hours, which the guide confirms with you before we begin.
You book your spot for free and, at the end, you give whatever contribution you think fair based on how you found the tour; the usual amount in Madrid is around 15 to 20 euros per person. We work with small groups, a maximum of 25 travellers per guide, so you can ask questions and listen without crowding or rushing.
