Medieval Madrid Free Tour

Madrid is the only major European capital that was born as an Arab fortress, and this free tour takes you straight to that origin that almost nobody notices in passing. We walk through the heart of medieval Madrid, from the remains of the Islamic wall to the area around the Royal Palace, to understand how a frontier military stronghold, the Mayrit of the 9th century, ended up as a town, a court and the capital of an empire. You will walk along streets that keep the layout of a thousand years ago, with the explanations of a local guide who tells you the history plainly and with real facts.

The walk begins in the old town, next to the Plaza de la Villa, and heads down towards the Cuesta de la Vega, where the sections of the original Arab wall appear, the oldest still standing in the city. From there we go up to the area around the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace, built on the site of the old Muslim fortress, and we explain to you why the name of the patron saint, the Almudena, comes from the Arabic word for citadel.

We finish in the gardens of the Temple of Debod, a real Egyptian temple more than two thousand years old that Egypt gave to Spain in 1968, with one of the best panoramas of the Sierra de Guadarrama and the sunsets Madrid is famous for. Along the way we pass corners such as the church of San Nicolás, with the oldest Mudéjar tower in the city, and the area of the old Moorish quarter, so you understand the Madrid of the three cultures before the court arrived.

At the end, if you enjoyed the tour, each person leaves the voluntary contribution they consider fair, around 15 to 20 euros, directly to the guide.
