What to see in Madrid

Madrid unfolds in three layers: the Habsburg old town, the monumental Bourbon expansion and the neighbourhoods that bring it to life, from Barrio de las Letras to Malasaña. Our guide maps out the city so you make the most of every day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a free tour in Madrid cost?
Booking is free and you pay nothing upfront. At the end you give the guide a voluntary contribution; in Madrid it usually runs between 15 and 20 euros per person, depending on how much you enjoyed it.
Which free tour is best to start with?
The Habsburg Madrid free tour is the most complete one for a first visit: it lays out the old town, from kilometre zero at Puerta del Sol to the Royal Palace, and leaves you oriented for the rest of the city.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, we recommend booking your spot because groups are small and tend to fill up in high season and at weekends. Booking is free and takes a minute to confirm.
Do the tours run if it rains?
Yes. As they are outdoor walks, we also head out in light rain (we recommend comfy shoes and an umbrella). A departure is only called off when the authorities issue a severe-weather warning.
Is the Toledo day trip worth it?
Very much. Toledo, the City of Three Cultures, is less than an hour from Madrid and can be seen in half a day or a full day. It is the most requested day trip from the capital.
